Paid vs Trade

Ahhh, the photographers (and models) dilemma – who pays who, how much, and what is reasonable?? The topic of paid vs trade has been a long running “flame war” on various forums and in industry, particularly with the rapid growth in the number of people with reasonable gear who think being a great photographer is as simple as turning up and pushing the shutter button!

Interesting conversation with a commercial photographer this evening, we were having a general purpose discussion about “tyre kickers” – those studio enquiries where they want a quote, perhaps want to hire some gear, really aren’t clear on their project, and would be interested in hiring a quality shooter but we need to see the numbers first and take them to the boss… Like a half-hearted used car buyer, they’re kicking the tyres but aren’t really buying! Oh what is a commercial shooter to do, when they feel like they’re competing with termites who shoot for free/cheap, hollowing out the walls of their customer base right before their eyes but keep you busy generating quote after pointless quote…

Ever had too many ideas? I’m sure I’m not the first to suffer from this very strange affliction. It actually affects many parts of my life – so many things to get done, I have no idea where to start… and so I don’t actually start anything. Instead, I poke around the edges, make excuses (“seriously, I need a steadicam before I can even BEGIN that project…”) and generally get frustrated at my lack of progress.

It’s been over 6 months since my last post, clearly it has been a tiny bit busy! Sooo much has happened, I’m not even going to try and encapsulate everything in this one little post! In an effort to avoid another long rambling post, here’s the quick summary:

Two days ago Canon released another camera – the EOS 1D C – I’m not going to go into specs or details, that’s not the point of this post. If you want to know more about Canon’s new 4K video camera, perhaps check here and here. The point of this post is to (briefly) wonder what is going on with the DSLR market exactly?? Are they for stills, are they for video, are they some weird blend of the two, and should I care?

…I’m not cheap, as the saying goes! There seems to be lots of noise at the moment about how professional photographers are fed up being asked to work for free or peanuts!! Normally I wouldn’t wade into these types of discussions, because I think I’m a bit of an anomaly in this space, but I do have some observations for those of you interested in sticking around to hear my ramblings (and this one could get long’ish, we’ll see…). So read on!!

Everyone here knows of my man-crush on Chase Jarvis (just hit the tag cloud, he’s the most common topic on this little rambling site!), it’s almost like he has a sixth sense for posting something right as I’m thinking/experiencing it!!
For example, over the last couple of days I’ve been pondering the idea of formal photography training. On one hand I think I would like to “round out” my photography knowledge with a little more theoretical substance – I can talk most of the tech but I sometimes wonder if I know enough, or if my knowledge is really as comprehensive as I pretend it is! But on the other hand, Ansell Adams said it best when he said “There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs…” – surely if I take enough images I’ll eventually hit my groove and know what I’m doing??

Ummm, wow? This one completely took me by surprise, and I will open by saying that a whole lot more investigation will be undertaken before I get too excited. On the surface, the Lytro sounds like weird voodoo camera magic, and maybe it is! Continue on for more…

Those that have been following my site (yes, both of you) will recall my drooling over Red cameras across the last few years (August 2010, June 2010, October 2009). To bring the rest of you up to speed, Red is the mad creation of Jim Jannard, founder of Oakley sunglasses and all round complete camera nutter! Jim had a simple idea – no camera existed that did exactly what he wanted, so he decided to create one! From scratch…
That was back around 2005. I heard about Red in late 2006, with their plan to build and release the Red One, a digital cinema camera. I didn’t get REALLY interested until some of the possible specs for the Scarlet FF35 were released end of 2008 (now on the Wayback Machine, Red has removed the original pages from their website!). The Scarlet FF35 was going to be MINE, and the planned prices looked almost tolerable (if you took a really deep breath, and reminded yourself you only live once!).

Another ramble, but only a short one – inspiration comes from a variety of places, and sometimes places where I least expect it – the supermarket has aisle after aisle of possibilities, at reasonable prices! But inspiration also comes from more expected places, like the websites of other awesome photographers!
What really gets me are those concepts that are so far beyond my own ideas, that I’m blind-sided by their awesomeness and immediately relegate my own idea to the archive (ie bin!!).
