It’s been over 6 months since my last post, clearly it has been a tiny bit busy! Sooo much has happened, I’m not even going to try and encapsulate everything in this one little post! In an effort to avoid another long rambling post, here’s the quick summary:

Finally got a chance to test out the Camera Axe I purchased (and built) a little while back. I’ve been itching to try out some commercial advertising style product shots using water splashes – the picture in my head was along the lines of this ad from 2009 (and I realise that Coca Cola spends a bucket load on editing in post!).
Liquids are good at misbehaving – they never seem to make the shape you want! But they do have the advantage of making other cool shapes you never expected! Read on for more!
Some announcements!! New News!!

It’s been probably the most hectic 2 or so weeks I’ve had in a long time – for those who know me, “busy” is a word I throw around a lot, almost to the point of abuse!! And I’m sure my friends no longer believe me when I say I’m busier than ever before!! But I am!! Seriously!! No, really, please believe me…. please?
OK, here’s the reason I have actually been really busy, and the news is very exciting – I have some announcements to make!! Hopefully some of you out there will be as excited as I am!! So, without further ado:
- First up, the workshop pilot website is official and operational now!! Go and check it out at http://www.shutterclass.com. It’s rough at the moment, but the intention is simple – if you are a photographer and you want to host a workshop to impart some of that amazing knowledge on an unsuspecting public, ShutterClass can help. The website is designed to sort out some of the annoying logistics, like managing attendees and getting payments in!! And the best part? It’s free during the pilot period while I try and iron out the bugs! Particularly useful for those of you that already run workshops, let ShutterClass sort out the registration hassles for you!
- What would a new workshop website be without some content? So I’m going to hold some workshops of my own. The first one is the “Relaxed Studio Lighting” workshop, aimed at (mostly new) photographers who would like a chance to get into a studio and experiment with some lights without stress or pressure!! We’ll have a couple of models along, talk about basic lighting concepts, and maybe work through a couple of concepts. If you are interested in attending these workshops (first one November 20), just head over to http://www.shutterclass.com and register!! They’re not expensive either, so get along and give it a shot!!
- Of course, with a new workshop website, and some workshops to run, I really needed somewhere to hold them! So what better way to launch the website and the workshops by also announcing that I’m opening a studio!! Yes, a studio, as in a full-on space for taking awesome images!!
ShutterClass Studios will be 3 or 4 large cycloramas (including one corner cyc), portrait walls, and a construction/wet area, along with portable makeup tables, shower/change facilities and roller-door access that can accommodate cars/motorbikes as well!! It’s all located conveniently in Huntingdale Road Oakleigh (walking distance from Huntingdale Train Station). Studio hire rates are still to be determined but they are going to be quite reasonable so even you new shooters and students can get a look in!! Keep your eye on the http://www.ShutterClass.com website for more details over the next 4 or so weeks.
That’s about it for news at this stage (phew, more than enough I think!!). There’s also a Facebook page and other bits and bobs, but these will all be cleaned up and linked together over the coming weeks!!
For now, I’m keen to hear from people who would be interested in running up a workshop through http://www.shutterclass.com (and you don’t have to be in Victoria to use the site!!). I’d love to chat to anyone who wants to know more about the studios, or wants to book them even!! They’re not built yet, but you’ll see some progress updates over the coming weeks. They’ll officially open in the middle of November, but there’s a chance for some early viewing/bookings before then!!
Righto, onwards and upwards!! Like I said, I’m “busy” 😉

Last months weekend of lighting tests (which produced the latest series with Jess) also resulted in an EXTREMELY productive session with Kaye, someone I’d not worked with before but who came with high recommendations from friends in South Australia!!

I’ve always been fascinated by long exposure photography, there are some amazing artists out there but I think this team from Russia are onto something special – they combined stop motion, long exposure, fashion models, and a (somewhat hard to follow) simple story!
Watch all 3 videos (including the behind the scenes), it’s definitely worth the time!!
Why fake it when real is possible?

Update 21 Jan 2010: So, it turns out it was faked, meaning that the wolf was proven to be trained/tame rather than wild. The photographer is still denying the claims, but has been stripped of the main prize. The image is still an actual photo, just the circumstances that went into creating it are suspect. Check this article for more detail.
This is the image that was able to win a prestigious award from the British Natural History Museum and also generate a stack of controversy with the veracity of the cries claiming “fake”!! I do not plan on analysing the image in an attempt to determine how genuine it is, there are others before me much better qualified to do so (and much more interested than I am!). If you want to read the background, there’s an article on Gizmodo and another on The Daily Mail.
I find these claims of fake interesting only because I can think of a bunch of ways I would capture this shot, and none of them involve PS!! In case you don’t know me, I’m squarely in the “PS is not a verb” camp – I will always aim to get a shot right in camera, editing is not my style and I don’t find it particularly enjoyable!! But I do REALLY enjoy nailing the perfect shot so that the only work needed is maybe a crop and an upload!!
But I digress – I looked closely at the image and thought about ways I would try to solve the problems so that I could get the image, and here’s what I came up with:
- Laser triggers – I have them, and they would be perfect for this. Set them up along the gate line, align strobes (having tested exposure on previous evenings), set meat out as the original photographer did, and then head inside for a cup of tea. Check camera in the morning…
- Long lens and patience – yes, I think it is possible to catch this image, but there’s no way I’m doing with with a short lens and risking scaring off the wolf (or making it angry!!). So I camp about 15 meters away, with a 400mm fully open and Pocket Wizards to fire strobes near the gate, and I hope I get lucky
- Wide lens on tripod up close – it’s a dark scene, I can’t be sure where the wolf is going to come from. So this time I take the Pocket Wizard and use it with the motor drive, stick a wide lens on (and have it wide open), and rapid fire when anything looks like it moves near the gate. Even with slower shutter speed, the strobe speed should give sharpness and a slightly longer exposure filles out the ambient. With strobe recycle times down to fractions of a second on low power, I could probably get 5 or so frames a second (although at that point the Pocket Wizard might be the limiting factor since they only do 1/200th or so and have quite a long lag between hits)
There are a variety of ways to get the image itself – I think the real trick is getting the wolf in the right place at the right time. I guess that’s where the controversy is, since it’s easy to claim the wolf was trained and placed in position. If I was using the laser triggers, I could camp away from the gate and when the time was opportune, effectively “herd” the wolf towards the gate (and the rush to escape would probably force the jump). Yes it’s random and requires luck, but how much wildlife photography doesn’t?
We’re in an era where the technology is smarter than the operator, and it will only get worse. We already have software like PhotoSketch that constructs an image out of random sources such as Google Images, so the days of crying “fake” are probably going to get worse before they get better.
Not sure about the rest of you photographers out there, but I sleep easy at night – I’m simply not good enough on the editing side of the equation to be able to fake anything!! And the only person I’m competing with is myself, in trying to improve my art!! Idealistic perhaps, but honest…

Came across this video today, and I have to say I’m somewhat stunned by it – I always knew that there was a bit of work involved in making a magazine cover, but I had no idea how much actually happens!!
