Steal like an artist

Regular readers here know that I tend to get a bit gooey when talking about Chase Jarvis – he takes the occasional pleasant image (!!) and also knows how succeed and grow in the business of photography! He’s an all-rounder, pure and simple – while old skool film shooters are lamenting the loss of the good ol’ days, Chase continues to tear it up!

So I was a little surprised when I saw Chase had updated his blog with an article titled “How to steal ideas like an artist“. Eh, what? The article is only short, so I suggest that you click the link and read it for yourself – basically Chase is saying that the source of your own art has to start with YOU, but that art will also be the product of everything you’ve seen, experienced and been inspired by!

I do like the quote in the article, from filmmaker Jim Jarmusch:

“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination…”

There’s more – go and read the article, think hard about what inspiration goes into your art, and then “steal” (figuratively) like there’s no tomorrow!! And remember, just like Jim says:

“Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent.”
